Tantra is as old as humanity and developed all over the world. About ten thousand years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean in the area which is now Turkey, Neolithic civilisation began as the change from hunter-gathering peoples to settled agriculture started.
This change was probably very rapid as the process of growing crops by planting seeds and the techniques of breeding animals started. Probably before then everything seemed a matter of chance and fate; finding berries, fruits or roots to eat; coming across grazing herds to hunt.
Probably some time earlier the role of men and sex had become clear in the miracle of the women giving birth so the link of planting seeds in the soil and men planting seeds in women was not hard to discover. The development of animal husbandry and breeding supported this.
This belief didn’t need to spread from its origins in the Eastern Mediterranean, as it probably became clear to many groups. As civilisations at this stage left few artifacts and had no writing it is hard to be definite.
There are symbols from the vast natural caverns of Paleolithic Europe around 20,000 BCE which match symbols used much later in tantra. On the islands of the Mediterranean were found many of the small figurines of the goddess; large breasted and bellied women, standing squatting giving birth or lying. In India tantra comes originally from the Dravidian people who occupied the area before the Aryan and Vedic culture started - about 6,000 BCE. The Dravidian people were probably related to the Australian Aborigines as earlier there was a land bridge between India and there. According to the theories of Dr. Terence Meaden, about 6,000 years ago, in England, Stonehenge was built as a giant stone womb of the Goddess.
At sunrise on midsummer morning, the shadow of the heel stone penetrates the circle through the largest gateway of stone the vulva and the shadow touches the central goddess stone. A symbolic sexual act; the marriage of the male and the female - the Sun God and the Earth Goddess.
Much of this history is hidden. At the end of the last ice age; about 12,000 years ago, sea levels rose by over 100m changing the shape of the face of the world and drowning an area the size of South America and the USA combined. The most advanced towns ot that time, which were usually near the coast, are underwater and until recently marine archeology was concerned with old wreaks not with underwater temples (this probably gave rise to the many versions of the Atlantis "legends ").
Under the seas there will be many early tantric temples and sites. A large city nine kilometers long has just been discovered a few miles off the western coast of India. The artifacts being recovered suggest that it is about 9.500 years old.
There is a book by Graham Hancock just published on this (Feb. 02). Understanding the processes of fertility were a matter of life and death of starvation or plenty - particularly in winter.
The earth was the Mother Goddess who provided and nourished and the rain and sun and lightning all came from the sky-father God. Everything came from the connection of the God and the Goddess: all animals, all plants all people.
Sex created the whole universe and all life depended on the dance of the male and female, It still does!!
Tantra honors this creation and dances with awareness this cosmic dance. It is the marriage of male and female; Shiva and Shakti; consciousness and energy.
